Behind the Scenes at the SYNC Senior Photography Conference in Destin, FL
Hello, friends! Annette and Christina here, checking in from beautiful Destin, Florida, where we’re attending the SYNC Senior Photography Conference. We wanted to take a moment to share some of our experiences so far and give you a glimpse into what we've been learning at this amazing event!
This trip is extra special for Christina, as it’s her first time at SYNC, while Annette is back for the third time. We’ve been soaking in a ton of valuable information, networking with fellow photographers, and, of course, enjoying the beautiful scenery. If you haven’t heard of SYNC, it’s a photography conference that focuses on senior photography, offering a mix of classes, hands-on shooting, and plenty of opportunities to meet other like-minded photographers.
What We’ve Learned So Far
The conference has been packed with useful tips, but we’ve already walked away with a few takeaways that we’re excited to implement in our own businesses.
1. Understanding Gen Z Seniors One of the biggest focuses of the conference has been on understanding Gen Z—our current senior clients. As photographers, it’s essential to know what they’re looking for, how to communicate with them, and what makes a session truly special. These teens aren’t just looking for a quick photo session; they want an experience that’s personalized to their unique style. They’re all about bold colors, authenticity, and comfort. For us, that means we need to go beyond just taking beautiful portraits. We need to make sure our sessions are interactive, fun, and tailored to each senior’s personality.
2. Marketing to Gen Z (and Their Parents) Marketing to Gen Z requires a different approach than what we’ve done in the past. With short attention spans and a strong presence on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, it’s all about staying trendy and engaging. We learned that Instagram is the platform for connecting with seniors directly, while Facebook is better for reaching their parents. And if you’re not leveraging TikTok? You’re missing out on a huge audience. We’ll be adjusting our strategies to make sure we’re speaking to both the seniors and their parents in a way that resonates with each group.
3. The Importance of Networking One of the best parts of attending a conference like this is the opportunity to meet fellow photographers from all over. Whether it’s chatting about tips for marketing, exchanging ideas for photo shoots, or simply bonding over shared experiences, networking is invaluable. For Christina, meeting many of the photographers Annette has worked with over the past few years has been an absolute highlight. It’s amazing how the photography community is so supportive, and we can’t wait to bring some of those friendships and ideas back home.
4. The Power of Personal Connections One of the key lessons we’ve learned at SYNC is that building personal relationships with our clients is more important than ever. Gen Z seniors are looking for photographers who understand them and can create an environment where they feel comfortable and authentic. This isn’t just about snapping great pictures; it’s about crafting an experience that will stick with them long after they’ve received their images.
A Few Fun Moments Along the Way
As you can imagine, travel and conferences always bring their fair share of unexpected moments, and this trip was no exception! On our way to Destin, we had a bit of an adventure with a flight delay caused by a bird hitting the engine. After de-boarding and rebooking our flights, we ended up with a 3-hour layover in Nashville. While it wasn’t exactly how we planned to spend our time, we made the best of it with a drink at the bar and some laughs.
On a brighter note, we’re staying in a gorgeous condo with an incredible sunset view, and we’re lucky to be surrounded by other photographers we adore. We've been sharing a lot of laughs, including tossing carrots from one balcony to another (don’t ask, just roll with it). It’s little moments like these that make this trip unforgettable.
What’s Next
As we head into the final days of the conference, we’re excited to learn more, meet even more photographers, and pick up more "nuggets" (as we like to call them) to apply to our work. We’re also hoping to squeeze in a few more recordings for our podcast, Wine Down and Focus with Annette and Christina, where we’ll talk all about what we’re learning and maybe even bring some of our new friends onto the show.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on what’s working for us as we continue to fine-tune our senior photography strategies. But one thing’s for sure: we are so grateful for this experience, and we’re already looking forward to next year!
Until next time, keep capturing those memories, and don’t forget to check out our latest podcast episode for more behind-the-scenes fun. Cheers!
